The Association of Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS) is organizing its 3rd Himalayan Studies Conference at Yale University from Friday March 14 to Sunday March 16, 2014.

Please note that registration for the conference is already full. However, the keynote talks are open to the public, and there will be live streams of the talks in two Luce Hall classrooms for any overflow. For any more information on the conference, including times for particular events, please visit the website: http://hsc2014.commons.yale.edu

Research scholars, health practitioners, and artists from institutions and universities across the world are convening at Yale’s MacMillan Center to address the central theme of the conference: the idea of Communities, broadly conceived. This includes issues relating to communities within and across the Himalaya; ongoing partnerships between scholars, governments and citizens in the region; as well as community practices that support Himalayan Studies as an emerging field of interdisciplinary scholarship.

A total of 33 panels and 6 roundtables have been finalized for the conference and over 150 participants have already registered to attend. The panels and roundtable discussions feature topics such as human-environment relationships, conservation policies, biomedicine, citizenship, social movements, migration, media, photography, art history, language communities, ethnic minorities, spatial authority, and development interventions within and across the Himalaya.

Mark Turin, Program Director of the Yale Himalaya Initiative is the Chair and Convener of the conference. Other members of the Organizing Committee include:

  • Sir Peter Crane, Dean and Professor of Botany, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies
  • Timothy Gregoire, Professor of Forest Management, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies
  • Arjun Guneratne, Professor and Chair of Anthropology, Macalester College
  • Andrew Quintman, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, Yale University
  • Sara Shneiderman, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies, Yale University
  • Kalyanakrishnan Sivaramakrishnan, Professor of Anthropology and Forestry & Environmental Studies, Yale University and Chair of the Yale South Asian Studies Council.

The program has been made possible thanks to generous support from the Yale Himalaya Initiative, the South Asian Studies Council at Yale, the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University, the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, the Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Memorial Fund, the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, and the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation.

The previous two Himalayan Studies conferences were held at Macalester College in October 2011 and at Western Michigan University in September 2012.
