China, the fastest growing economic power on earth, is reaching out. Convinced the world has serious misperceptions about China, Beijing’s leaders are building a new and more dynamic media machine in an effort to reshape its image. Jim Laurie, veteran broadcaster, Emmy Award winner and Asia specialist, is Director of Broadcasting at the Journalism and Media Studies Center of the University of Hong Kong. He is also consultant to the English language channel of China Central Television in Beijing.
Laurie provides an inside view of China state media today. He relates developments in Beijing to the rise of multi-media operations from Moscow to Qatar to Delhi to Tokyo: all seeking to challenge world media leaders like CNN and BBC. Laurie will also discuss international news coverage in China and introduce Hong Kong’s Journalism Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong and the China Media Project which monitors media freedom on the Chinese mainland.
