The site of Loulan is located at the northern bank of Lop Nor (Lopnur or Luobubo), Xinjiang. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin was among the first to visit the lost kingdom that was once prosperous from the second century BCE to the forth century CE. Much archaeological work has been done since 1949. This talk will try to position Loulan in a longer historical span, and to investigate what would have been the local culture developed by the Indo-European population and what would have been the transcultural elements introduced by the Han people from China.
