Since the late 1990s, millions of Chinese workers have been laid off from state-sector jobs, causing significant dislocation for them and their families. Drawing upon recent survey evidence from China, Professor Park will discuss the current situation facing workers in urban China (including estimates of poverty, unemployment, and social insurance coverage), the development of labor markets, and the policy challenges of creating jobs and providing effective social safety nets for newly vulnerable groups.
