In this piece for Dissent MagazineDenise Y. Ho—assistant professor of twentieth-century China—writes about the recent imprisonment of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy student activists.  She argues that the Hong Kong government’s pursuit of prison terms, with the attendant inability to stand for office for five years, has disenfranchised them—the loss of political rights the very issue that sparked the Umbrella Movement street protests of 2014.
