Asa Yoneda - Translation Masterclass #2
Asa Yoneda - Translator
All with reading-level Japanese welcome. Preparation will involve trying out translating a page. Places limited to 10; first come first serve. Email rosa.vanhensbergen@yale.edu(link sends e-mail) to sign up.
This translation masterclass is an opportunity for anyone with an interest in Japanese-English translation (preexisting or newly sparked) to join us in discussion with translator and writer, Asa Yoneda. In preparation we ask that you have a go at translating a short passage (less than one page), assigned by the translator, which will form the basis of our discussion. Our hope is to foster a welcoming conversation about the creative challenges and enjoyments of literary translation, and perhaps to even inspire new ventures into its craft
Asa Yoneda is a literary translator based in Bristol, UK, whose translations include Rin Usami’s Idol, Burning and Yukiko Motoya’s The Lonesome Bodybuilder (Picnic in the Storm), as well as Banana Yoshimoto’s Dead-End Memories and Moshi Moshi. She is currently translating books by Yoshimoto, Hiromi Kawakami, and Kumi Kimura, alongside co-editing a series of chapbooks forthcoming from Strangers Press.
