We hear much today about Yale’s contacts with China - Bulldogs in Beijing, Yale-China, Semester at Beijing University, and faculty going back and forth with great frequency. But when did these contacts begin? What did they mean to the participants? And what was Yale like when these contacts began? The talk will focus on Yung Wing (Yale Class of 1854) and his great ambition to give other Chinese boys the same opportunity that he had - an ambition that was realized in the Chinese Educational Mission of 1872-1881. The talk will emphasize new research findings from this past summer, plus illustrations from 19th century drawings and photographs.
