On March 11th, a magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan. In the quake and the ensuing tsunami, thousands have lost their lives and more are stranded without help. The ensuing failure of the cooling systems at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant have led to an unprecedented challenge for Japan. This panel discussion, moderated by Jun Saito, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale, reviews special features of the disaster, analyzes what went wrong in the nuclear power plant, and investigates the implications for the future of Japan and the world. Following the panelist presentations, there will be a discussion of what the Yale community can do for disaster relief and prevention, as well as a candlelight vigil for victims and their families on Cross Campus at 8:30 PM. Disaster relief donations will be collected at the event. Candlelight vigil for victims and their families follows event at 8:30 PM on Cross Campus.

Hope for Japan, a night of food and song following Vigil at Berkeley Dining Hall, 9:00-10:30.
