Join us for an informal discussion about the state of Japanese film and pop culture and Schilling’s career as a critic and journalist.

Mark Schilling has a long and distinguished career as a film critic, journalist, and scholar of Japanese cinema and popular culture. He regularly writes reviews for The Japan Times and reports on the film industry for Variety. His books as author and editor include The Encyclopedia of Japanese Pop Culture (Weatherhill, 1997), Contemporary Japanese Film (Weatherhill, 1999), The Yakuza Movie Book – A Guide to Japanese Gangster Films (Stone Bridge Press, 2003) and No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema (FAB Press, 2007). He has even penned books on sumo and Tokyo night life. He is a program advisor for the Udine Far East Film Festival and his film series Beyond Godzilla: Alternative Futures and Fantasies in Japanese Cinema is currently showing at the Japan Society in New York.
