Japanese Pronunciation Pedagogy Workshop Series 2: Raising Awareness of Japanese Pitch Accents

Professor Toshiyuki Kawano from Yokohama National University will give a lecture on the importance of developing Japanese pitch accents of learners and a hands-on workshop about teaching Japanese pitch accents. This workshop will allow us to consider the necessary skills to teach pronunciation and guide us to train ourselves.  We will learn the basic knowledge of Japanese pitch accents and techniques that we can utilize in our class.  Professor Kawano will also demonstrate how to guide students to realize and produce the pitch accents depending on the words’ part of speech and origin.

Prior to this workshop, we welcome questions that you may have and challenges that you are struggling with regarding instructing pronunciations (Due December 10).  This workshop will be conducted in Japanese.

Professor Toshiyuki Kawano’s expertise lies in Japanese phonetics, Japanese pronunciation pedagogy, training Japanese instructors, and Japanese pedagogy methodology.  His publications include Ichinichi 10-pun no hatsuon renshu [Pronunciation practice of the day for 10 minutes] (2004); Onsei kyouiku no jissen [Practical pronunciation teaching]  (2014); Nihongo Kyouiku Yoku Wakaru Onsei [Japanese Pedagogy: Introduction to Phonetics] (2018).
