For 25 years China has been the most successful developing economy with sustained economic growth near 10% and the largest decline in poverty in history (from more than 600 million people living on less than $1 per day at the beginning of reform to 135 million in 2004). This success, however, has brought new strains and challenges, and past performance is no guarantee of future success. David Dollar, World Bank country director for China, based in Beijing, will talk about the key stress points in contemporary China: environmental degradation and unsustainable use of natural resources, especially water and energy; rising inequality and the “rich-poor gap”; problems in the rural health and education systems; the shaky foundation of the state-owned banking system; and the inter-related issues of mounting corruption and pressures for political reform.
