Yale University Library was the first major American academic library to own a Chinese book, and Yale also has one of the earliest Sinology programs in the United States. Moreover, the Chinese rare book collection at Beinecke has some unique strengths to distinguish itself from those in other major American libraries. It is worth remembering that the bonds signified by books are foundational in the culture exchange between America and China. During the past 170 years, many missionaries and scholars devoted a lot in the development of Chinese Collection and Sinology programs at Yale University. Their contributation laid the roots for our work today and further development in the future.

Haizheng Yang received her PhD in Chinese Literature and is Professor in the Department of Chinese Langauge & Literature at Peking University, China. Research interests include Chinese classics, Chinese rare books overseas and the development of Sinology outside China.
