The Yale-China Association is pleased to present a daylong workshop for middle and high school teachers in the greater New Haven Area. The objective of the workshop will be to provide resources, experience, and a seminar-like setting for designing lesson plans related to the art, literature, and memory of China’s Cultural Revolution decade. Participants will prepare materials in advance and plan lessons or units together.

The workshop will be facilitated by Professor Denise Ho, an historian at Yale University and a specialist on the history of twentieth-century China. Since 2005, she has taught at the college level in the Boston area, at the University of Kentucky, and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. When Professor Ho was a Yale undergraduate, she taught piano and creative writing at Prince Elementary School in New Haven. After graduation, she was a fellow for the Yale-China Association, teaching junior high and high school for two years in a public high school in Changsha, the capital of China’s Hunan Province.

Participants in the workshop will read short stories about China’s Cultural Revolution, examine propaganda posters and consider their classroom use, and view and discuss a new oral history project at the University of Pittsburgh on memories of the Cultural Revolution. Haihui Zhang, Director of the CR-10 project and Sandi Ward, Project Assistant, will participate in the workshop.
