Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Humanities of East Asia

The Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University seeks applications for the CEAS Postdoctoral Associate in the Environmental Humanities. The appointment period is from July 1st, 2019 – June 30th, 2021. Reappointment for the second year will be subject to satisfactory evaluation of the first year performance in the postdoctoral position.

The postdoctoral associate is expected to teach one course over the two years of the fellowship. The fellow also will collaborate each year with a faculty member to lead the yearlong Environmental Humanities workshop, a seminar discussion group that meets six times per semester as part of the new Environmental Humanities Graduate Certificate Program. The postdoctoral associate is invited to join the Yale Environmental Humanities Steering Committee, which is comprised of faculty and students and thus participate in the overall leadership and direction of Environmental Humanities at Yale.

Requirements: Ph.D. awarded between 2016 and June 15, 2019 specializing in the environment in East Asia from the perspective of literature, history, history of art, anthropology, religion, cinema, or another humanities perspective; remain in residence for duration of appointment; play an important leadership role in helping to launch Yale’s proposed new graduate certificate program in the environmental humanities; during appointment, pursue a significant research and writing project; and teach one undergraduate course for majors in East Asian Studies. Proposals with single region or transregional emphasis on China, Japan, and/or Korea are welcome.
