Gary Leung received a BSSc in Government and Public Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with double minors in Statistics and Philosophy. During his undergraduate studies, he was an exchange student at both Peking University in China and the University of Sussex in Britain. His current academic interests include East Asian politics, identity politics, conflict and violence, and separatism. His undergraduate thesis explored why authoritarian governments are more likely to suppress separatist movements in their own country, a question that concerns many Hongkongers as some believe that a democratic China would also not accommodate separatist demands. At Yale, he plans to specialize in Chinese and East Asian Politics and further develop research interests in some substantive topics.
