Qiyuan Liu

Qiyuan Liu was born and raised in Zhejiang province, China and went to Nankai University in Tianjin, where he majored in history and was selected for Boling Honors College. In the fall of 2022, he studied sociology and history in UC Berkeley as an exchange student. Qiyuan holds interest to a wide range of topics, including Hangzhou local history, social history of modern China, landscape, and China-U.S. transnational communication. For his M.A. program, Qiyuan wishes to establish a framework to explain the development of documentary photography in PRC from a social-cultural perspective and be prepared for his doctoral studies afterwards. Aside from academics, Qiyuan is an enthusiast of photography and writing. He is also a contributor of a volunteer translation project since 2022, dedicated to introduce classic photography critiques to Chinese readers.
