January 31, 2023

Yale archaeologist William Honeychurch has been awarded the Order of the Polar Star from Mongolia, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Mongolian government on foreign citizens. The award was presented to Honeychurch in late November in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital.

Honeychurch, an associate professor of anthropology in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, first visited Mongolia in 1991 as a Peace Corps volunteer and has since dedicated his research to studying ancient nomadic political organization in East and Central Asia. Over the years, he has forged connections with scholars in Mongolia where he has conducted archaeological fieldwork.
