Chinadialogue: Creating an Environmental Dialogue Across the Firewall
Isabel Hilton - Founder and Editor, chinadialogue.net; Editor in Chief, opendemocracy.net
China recently overtook the US as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases by volume and, with future projected growth rates, China’s emissions could double in the next two decades. Climate change mitigation requires constructive dialogue not only with the Chinese government but with a broad spectrum of stakeholders in China, including experts, civil society and policy makers. This presentation will explore China’s environmental and climate change crisis and examine the obstacles and opportunities for dialogue. Isabel Hilton is a London based writer and broadcaster who has reported extensively from Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. In addition to her writing career, she has made several radio and television documentaries. She is currently a columnist for the Guardian and presenter of BBC Radio 3’s flagship cultural program Night Waves, editor in chief of www.openDemocracy.net, the global current affairs website and founder and editor of www.chinadialogue.net, an innovative bilingual website devoted to climate change and environment.
