Charles Hartman received his PhD in Chinese language and literature from Indiana University in 1975. He published Han Yü and the T’ang Search for Unity (Princeton University Press) in 1986. His research since the 1990s concerns Song dynasty historiography, especially the influence of the Learning of the Way movement (daoxue) on the composition and transmission of Song history. He has been a member of the Department of East Asian Studies, The University at Albany, since 1980.
