Edgar Li was born in Zhejiang, China. He is mainly interested in Modern Japanese history, especially the class of displaced samurai after the Meiji Restoration and their contribution to the rise of Pan-Asianism and militarism in Japan during the 1930s. He is also mesmerized by the complicated and even controversial interactions between China and Japan in the modern age, which left a profound legacy to not only the two countries’ current relationship but also the geopolitical structure of East Asia in general. He has earned his B.A. from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota with a major in history and a minor in Japanese. As an enthusiast in language learning, he has studied Japanese and German and worked as a Japanese tutor in the Department of Asian Studies and Languages of Macalester College.
