In a run-down tenement in Edo’s Ryōgoku district, the much-disliked landlord Kanbei is found murdered one night. Suspicion first falls on Bunkichi, who always verbalized his resentment against Kanbei, and on the rōnin Shinozaki Genzaemon, who owed the landlord money.
